Flowering trees were one of Vincent Van Gogh's favorite subject to paint. To him, they represented awakening, hope, and new life. The bold outlines and the positioning of the tree in 'Almond Blossoms' is unlike any of Van Gogh's other paintings. It seems to be influenced by Japanese printmaking, which he admired.
'Almond Blossoms' was a gift for his brother Theo and sister-in-law Jo, who had just had a baby son, Vincent Willem. In a letter announcing the new arrival, Theo wrote: "As we told you, we’ll name him after you, and I’m making the wish that he may be as determined and as courageous as you."
Vincent wrote to his mother: "How glad I was when the news came... I should have greatly preferred him to call the boy after Father, of whom I have been thinking so much these days, instead of after me; but seeing it has now been done, I started right away to make a picture for him, to hang in their bedroom, big branches of white almond blossom against a blue sky."
Unsurprisingly, it was this work that remained closest to the hearts of the Van Gogh family. Vincent Willem went on to found the Van Gogh Museum, where this painting remains as part of the permanent collection.
