Artist: Vincent Van Gogh
"For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream."
Vincent Willem van Gogh (March 30, 1853 to July 29, 1890) was a Dutch Post Impressionist painter known for his vivid use of colors and expressive brushstrokes. He is immortalized in public imagination as the quintessential misunderstood artist.
Although he did not enjoy fame and fortune during his lifetime, his paintings are now among the most sought after and expensive works of art in the world. Thanks to the publication of Vincent's letters, we know much about his life, creative process, beliefs, and struggles. Vincent maintained a frequent correspondence with his brother, Theo. After Theo's death, his widow Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, inherited all of Vincent's paintings. She would devote the rest of her life to promoting Vincent's work --organizing exhibitions of his paintings and publishing volumes of the brothers correspondence. Gradually, the intense story of the passionate painter who suffered for his art spread throughout Europe. Eventually the world would fall in love with the story of Vincent's life and his paintings.
